Chapter 11 & 12 Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Chapter 11 & 12 - Coursework Example In my opinion, allowing the judges the discretion of setting bail, helps them in dealing with the conflicting reality associated with reason for setting bail; whether bail is used to ensure that a defendant appears in court for trial or for the purpose of protecting the society (Neubauer and Fradella 261). This is a dilemma that faces judges in their day-to-day administration of bail. This law may be seen to violate a defendantââ¬â¢s constitutional right to bail; however, it should be noted that, it considers the rights of the society at large. It would politically infeasible to free all violent crime offenders on bail knowing very well that they may commit violent crimes again; similarly, jailing all those accused of violent offenses might not be feasible since jails are not enough to accommodate them. This law, therefore, not only protects the society, ensures that defendantsââ¬â¢ rights to bail is not infringed, identifies the dilemma judges face and thus equips them with th e power to balance these competing demands-protecting the society, and protecting defendants constitutional rights. It should be noted that, constitutional rights such as the right to bail, are only meaningful when they do not infringe on the rights of others. Additionally, according to the Eighth Amendment Right, there is no absolute provision for the right of bail to all citizens irrespective of crime and logistical nightmares, as such to protect the citizensââ¬â¢ right to bail, despite the judgeââ¬â¢s discretion; it grants that bail must not be excessive. Movie Review Essay Example for Free
Movie Review Essay The famous, well known writer and director Meera Syal has written a breathtaking movie Anita and Me. Meera Syal is a best selling novelist and has sold thousands of her fantastic stories one of which is called, Anita and Me all over the country. Syal puts a lot of herself in her work and also she is a British born woman; however she still has her Indian origin which revolves in her storys and movies. Her movies have been compared to the following Bend it Like Beckham and East is East. These movies all have an Indian culture behind them as well as a fun and laughter side. Its also has its own culture in the movie while being surrounded by the British society, and also one which a young girl wants very much to be a part of, although the dominant culture doesnt mean it is going to be all peachy, if that is what you are thinking, that is what made it the most amusing and most incredible movie of the year. The story of Anita and Me basically revolves round Meena when she was living in a little village called Tollington. Meena is a young Indian girl who was born in Britain. She wants to be like all the other British people in her neighbourhood, eating fish finger instead of chapattis, having colourful flowers in her garden instead of crop and also have a normal life were you could go out whenever you wanted to with your mates, but instead Meena has to spend more time with her family. To be honest Meena wants to be English! See Meena is Punjabi and she cannot speak a word of Punjabi, however her midlands ascent is stronger than most of the families which have been living there for generations. Her parents brought Meena to England to have a better quality of life for their daughter, but Meena is having a difficult time adjusting to her surroundings. However trouble rides up in town when a girl gang known as the wenches, who very much enjoy teasing young boys and thieve from their local sweets shop, unfortunately for Meena, the gang leader was her next door neighbour and soon became her future best friend. Meena and Anita eventually formed an unlikely bond, and become like blood sisters, vowing to be there for each other through thick and thin. However, Meena was facing her secondary school entrance exam and during that time she had suffered domestic abuse by Anitas mother and toured the two girls apart. Meena wants to be like Anita, a blond, light-headed British girl who is 14 years old. Meena admires Anita for her charm, good looks and her independence, and in so many different ways Meena wants to be like her. The story took place in year 1972. Political correctness has not yet been invented. The called dark skins in English villages are as rare as black footballers in the First Division. Life me be quite old fashioned, but its also racist. For example:Ã Meenas friend Anitas mum comes home one day with a cuddly black poodle pup.Ã Whats it called? Anitas little sister asks. Nigger, she is told. And no-one blinks an eye. In the movie some of the British characters refer to Meena and her family as wogs and darkies. A member of Meenas family was beaten up and was killed for being Indian. Meena then finds out that Anita and her boyfriend Sam went Paki bashing (go of to kill the Indians). This starts to ring a bells and Meena then realize that it was Sam who killed her uncle. The film finally ends with English music being played in the background. The whole family starts to dance to the music and then Meenas Dad begins to sing in Punjabi along with the music. This shows that the two cultures are eventually beginning to mix and become friends. From racism to the repairs to the local church this movie covers most of the areas of life. In the movie Meena becomes more independent and begins to make her own decision towards her life, whereas before her parents used to make them all. There has been some high and low points in Meenas family life and eventually they get what they want in the end and the neighbourhood becomes more peaceful. Meena passed in her entrance exam for the Grammar School and so the family can move to a better neighbourhood. Meena found out that she couldnt please the whole world even if that did mean her racist neighbourhood because she was meant to Indian. When Meena moved away to live closer to her new school, she had left behind a chapter of her life, and had matured enough to have realized that Anita was never a real friend. I personal think that this movie a perfect example of what Indians where put through back in the days in England. The English had discriminated the Indians and the Asians just because of their skin colour, however this doesnt only happen in England, it happens all over the world. This movie is also show a culture side of the story and a bit of history about Indian, such as the independents when India and Pakistan was split into to different countries. The movie Anita and Me was amusing and enjoyable to watch and was fast moving. Anita and Me is a unique vision of the British childhood in the early seventies, a childhood caught between two cultures, each on the edge of enormous change. For these points I would rate this movie 4 star.

The Language of Eudora Weltys Losing Battles :: Eudora Welty Losing Battles
The Language of Eudora Welty's Losing Battles In his essay, "The Languages of Losing Battles", Mr. Bass contends that the form of language used by two major characters in Eudora Welty's Losing Battles, Julia Mortimer and Granny Vaughn, serves as a challenge to the "male-authored decrees" (Bass) found throughout the book. Julia's idioms are "teaching, writing, and books," (Bass)while Granny Vaughn, on the other hand, uses oral language to transmit family history. While Julia's province is one of ideas and abstraction in the written word, Granny Vaughn's stories are concrete, empirical, and rooted in actual events and real people. How these two methods of questioning male authority are used by the two characters is discussed at length by Mr. Bass, and this discussion comprises much of the bulk of this article. The "male-authored decrees" challenged by the two women throughout the book are numerous, and Mr. Bass makes use of only a few of these to make his point. In truth, although his thesis is strong and well composed, most this article consists of a rather opaque discussion of biblical symbolism, and how its various applications in the novel relate to Granny Vaughn's "spoken folk myth." In Losing Battles,Julia has "written her own apocrypha" (Bass) on leaves torn from her bible. This is used by Bass as a prototype of written challenge to male authority. In some way, Bass contends, the written word of Julia is a counterweight to Granny's dominance of the family, although Julia's words must be taken for what they are, since she is not alive to interpret them. While the written word "moves outward toward the abstract or conceptual and away from the concrete center," the spoken language of Granny Vaughn and others "draws in close to make the emblematic concrete, familial." (Bass) What exactly this balance does for the furthering of the women's influence in the book is a question that seems to have been left for the reader to answer. Included in the piece is an interesting discussion of "banners and battles," and the way that these images "mark the main conflict of the novel between local and absolute."Bass uses the emblem of "Jack's 'torn sleeve that flowed free from his shoulder like some old flag carried home from far-off battle.' " to represent a convergence of a "banner" with a "battle". Mr. Bass has taken a risk with his attempt to convince his readers that

Garlic: A Taste for Health :: Botany
Garlic: A Taste for Health Culinary garlic is one of the most medically studied herbs today. it has been cultivated since the Neolithic period around 10,000 BC. This bulb has flavored the food of hunters and nomads after the discovery of its intensively robust flavor. The summarians (2600 BC-2100 BC) were actively practicing the healing powers of garlic, and some believe the summarians to have introduced garlic to China, from where it later spread to Japan and Korea. However, some taxonomists believe garlic to be endemic to China. Records have indicated that the medicinal respect for garlic was not fully appreciated in regions of India, China, as well as in southern Europe. The summarians had been using garlic for some time before others caught on to its medicinal success. Many cultures have remedied various ailments with this potent herb. The Egyptians, documented on a papyrus dating back to 1500 BC, prescribed garlic for 22 diseases (1). And according to the 5th century Greek historian Herodotus, the Egyptians had carved an inscription into the great pyramid of King Khufu (Cheops) detailing the amount of garlic, onions, and radishes eaten by the slaves during the twenty-year building period. Egyptians slaves caused the first ever-recorded strike when a ration of garlic did not turn up on time (1). The slaves ate garlic to increase their stamina and to maintain their over-all health. Cloves of garlic have been found in the tomb of Tutankamen who ruled Egypt until 1338 BC. And the Egyptians were not the only ones to worship garlic. According to Theophrastus, ancient Greeks offered garlic on piles of stones at crossroads as a supper for Hecate, god of the underworld. The Bible has even mentioned the Israelites, delivered out of bondage by Moses, complaining of their food and wishing for the same things they had been eating while they were slaves: "Oh, that we had some of the delicious fish we enjoyed so much in Egypt, and the wonderful cucumbers and melons, leeks, onions, and garlic!" (Numbers 11:5, The Living Bible; 2). This pungent herb is also mentioned in the literature of other great kingdoms: Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, and Rome (2). Garlic can be found medically prescribed in ancient texts as far back as 1550 BC (1). Garlic was always an ingredient in potions thought to cure external and internal disease (1). The ancient Greeks and Romans used the herb from anything like repelling scorpions to curing bladder infections.

The Effects of Watching TV essays
The Effects of Watching TV essays Watching television is one of the most popular pastimes in the world. Almost all children do so; some even take the liberty of slipping out of bed unnoticed at night just to watch a show that they like. However, what most people do not realize is that television can ruin your eyesight, cause lack of concentration and can also inculcate many bad habits, especially in young ones. Most shows shown on the television nowadays involve bright color. According to the media, the brighter the picture, the better it is. But doctors feel the contrary. Almost all the latest movies and cartoons shown on television use a variety of special effects. Most of these involve explosions and gun fights (in the case of movies) and flashes of lightning and bursts of color at times of animated violence (in the case of cartoons). These sudden and intermittent flashes of light are capable of causing serious damage to the eye and can cause temporary blindness and migraine if a person watches television excessively. This was the case with the recent popular Japanese cartoon show, Pokemon, where certain animals with special powers emitted balls of lightning or fire when prompted; many children suffered from headaches as a result of watching the show and complaints are still being issued against the show for the same reason. Another very common problem noticed in people who watch too much of television is their lack of concentration. This is caused as a result of the combination of visual and auditory media which alert most of the senses of the viewer. These senses are heightened to a great extent as a result of which perception of sounds improves. However, this poses as a disadvantage as even the smallest of noises or disturbances can divert ones attention from the task at hand. This is especially seen in the case of people who normally study in the close vicinity of an operational television set. This can cause lots of other added problems; restlessness ...

The Oddyssey essays
The Oddyssey essays In Homers Odyssey, Odysseus leads his men on the difficult journey back to Ithaca. The journey tests Odysseuss leadership abilities. Odysseus is often distracted and fails to protect his men. On other occasions, Odysseuss men would die if it were not for him. In The Odyssey, Odysseus has strengths and weaknesses in his leadership ability. On some occasions, Odysseus uses his crafty mid to overcome obstacles. When Odysseus and his men encounter the Cyclops, the Cyclops eats Odysseus men. However, Odysseus is still able to outsmart the Cyclops and save his men. He tells the Cyclops his name is Nobody so the other Cyclopes wont come to help him, he gets the Cyclops drunk, pokes out his eye, and escapes with his men underneath the sheep. Another time Odysseus shows his cleverness is when he doesnt enter the Laestrygonians harbor with his ship. The other ships enter the harbor and get pelted with huge boulders. Although Odysseus is smart, sometimes he has too much confidence when dealing with anything he may encounter, and as a result he puts his men in unnecessary danger. One example is when Odysseus insists on going into the Cyclops cave and eating his food. Although he doesnt know about the Cyclops and his ways, he shouldnt have relied on the common law of hospitality that he and his men would be welcome there. Another example is when Odysseus wastes time putting on his armor when he sails past Scylla, although he was instructed not to. Odysseus sometimes tries hard to protect his men. On Hyperions island, Odysseus knowingly warns his men not to slaughter the Sun Gods cattle. He does his best to stop his men, but the gods make him fall asleep, and his men disobey Odysseus. However, other times Odysseus does not keep his men out of danger. This can be seen in the incident with the Laestrygonians. All of the ships enter the harbor, but at the last minute O...

Environmental Microbiology Lab Report Essays
Environmental Microbiology Lab Report Essays Environmental Microbiology Lab Report Paper Environmental Microbiology Lab Report Paper Materials Distilled water Test tube 6 Unopened packages of 1 sterile cotton swab 2 sterile nutrient agar Petri dishes 1 sterile blood agar Petri dish Incubator Refrigerator Bunsen burner Gas connection Plastic tubing Inoculating loop 12 sterile glass slides Wax pencil Igniter Crystal violet dye Grams iodine Ethyl alcohol Seafaring dye Paper towels Wire rack Sink Brightened compound microscope Lens paper Immersion oil Pen and paper Methods I. Collecting the environmental specimens: 1. Place some distilled water into the test tube. 2. Open one package of sterile cotton swabs by peeling apart the packaging at the top. Do not peel the package apart completely, just at the top. 3. Take out the cotton swab, dip it into the test tube of distilled water, and place it back into the original package with the cotton tip facing down. 4. Repeat the previous two steps for three more unopened packages of sterile cotton swabs. 5. Choose four locations from which environmental samples can be taken. For example, use the bottom of a shoe, a light switch, or a sink handle). Write these locations down on a piece of paper and number them El -EH for later reference. (For example, El is the sink handle). 6. At each location, take out one of the wetted sterile cotton webs and rub it against a small area of the surface being sampled. Make sure to turn the swab as well to ensure that the sample is on all sides of the cotton swab. After swabbing, p lace each swab back into its original package, with the cotton tip facing downwards. Keep track of which swabs were used for which samples. Label them if necessary. II. Collecting the throat and nose samples: steps for one more unopened package with a sterile cotton swab. 5. Take one of the wetted sterile cotton swabs and rub it against the inside of ones nose. Make sure to turn the swab as well to ensure that the sample is on all sides of the tone swab. After swabbing, place the swab back into its original package, with the cotton tip facing downwards. 6. Repeat the previous step, but instead take a sample from the back of the throat. Ill. Aseptic transfer of the environmental specimens: 1. Take the two nutrient agar Petri dishes and turn them bottom side up. Then, using a wax pencil, draw a line down the middle of each dish. Label each of these four sections El, EH, EH, EH so that the origin of each sample is known for later. 2. Take out one cotton swab that was used on an environmental surface out of its packaging. Keep this swab in one hand. . With the other hand, open the lid of one sterile nutrient agar Petri dish slightly at an angle. 4. Take the cotton swab in the other hand and gently swab it against the appropriately labeled half of the nutrient agars surface evenly. . Close the lid of the nutrient agar Petri dish and place the cotton swab back into its packaging. Dispose of the cotton swab and package in the appropriate container. 6. Repeat the previous four steps for the other three cotton swabs used on the environmental surfaces. Make sure to use the appropriate swab for the appropriately labeled section of the Petri dish. 7. Place the two inoculated nutrien t agar plates into the incubator in an inverted position, or with the lid facing downwards, to prevent condensation on the agars surface. IV. Aseptic transfer of the nose and throat specimens: 1. Take the one blood agar Petri dish and turn it bottom side up. Then, using a wax pencil, draw a line down the middle of the dish. Label each of these two sections N and T so that the origin of each sample is known for later. 2. Take out the cotton swab that was used on the inside of the nose out of its packaging. Keep this swab in one hand. 3. With the other hand, open the id of the sterile blood agar Petri dish slightly at an angle. 4. Take the cotton swab in the other hand and gently swab it against the appropriate half 5. Close the lid of the blood agar Petri dish and place the cotton swab back into its packaging. Dispose of the cotton swab and package in the appropriate container. 6. Repeat the previous four steps for the other cotton swab used on the back of the throat. 7. Place the inoculated blood agar plate into the incubator in an inverted position, or with the lid facing downwards to prevent condensation on the agars surface. V. Making heat fixed bacterial smears of all the samples: . Take the twelve sterile glass slides and label their corners using the wax pencil. Use the igniter to ignite the Bunsen burner flame. 6. With one hand, take the inoculating loop and pass it through the flame until it is red 7. With the other hand, open one of the Petri dishes slightly. 8. Take the sterilized inoculating loop and lightly touch it to one of the colonies on the agars surface. 9. Close the Petri dish lid and take the inoculating loop and gently smear it in the drop of water on the appropriately labeled slide so that it coincides with the sample you took from. Smear from side to side to create a thin film. Let this slide air-dry. 10. Pass the inoculating loop through the flame again until it is red-hot. 1. Repeat the previous eight steps for the rest of the samples and slides. Remember to take two samples from each of the six locations, each from a different colony. Also remember to place the colony samples on the appropriately labeled slide. 12. Once the twelve slides have dried, pass each one through the Bunsen burner flame once or twice. Do not hold the slide in the flame, as this will cause the sample on the slide to burn. 13. If the nutrient gar and blood agar Petri dishes are going to be used again, place them in the refrigerator, if not, place them in the appropriate container. VI. Gram staining all of the samples: 1 . Separate the twelve heat fixed slides into three groups of four. This makes it easier to apply the dyes to the slides for the appropriate amount of time. 2. Take one of the three groups of heat fixed slides and place them on the wire rack on top of the sink. 3. Take the crystal violet dye and apply it to the slides on the rack generously, making sure to cover the entire slide. Leave the crystal violet dye on the slides for thirty seconds. . Rinse the crystal violet dye off of the slides with distilled water, and place the slides back onto the wire rack. 5. Place the Grams iodine generously onto only one of the slides and let it sit for ten seconds. Rinse the slide immediately with distilled water and return it to the wire rack. Repeat this step for the other three slides, making sure to do each slide individually to ensure that the Grams iodine does not stay on the slide for more than ten seconds. 6. Take one slide and hold it at an angle over the sink. Take the ethyl alcohol and carefully place ten drops of it onto the slide, allowing it to slide off quickly. Immediately rinse the slide with distilled water and place it back on the wire rack. Repeat this step for the other three slides, making sure to do each slide individually to ensure that the ethyl alcohol does not stay on the slide for too long. 7. Take the seafaring dye and apply it to the slides on the rack generously, making sure to cover the entire slide. Leave the seafaring dye on the slides for thirty seconds. 8. Rinse the seafaring dye off of the slides with distilled water, and place the slides onto a paper towel to dry. The excess water on the slides can be blotted off gently with another paper towel. . Repeat the previous seven steps for the other two groups of four slides. VII. Determining the morphology and the gram stain results of the samples: 1 . Take out the brightened compound microscope, plug it into an outlet, and turn the power switch on. 2. Use the lens paper to wipe off the objective and ocular lenses. 3. Take one of the gram stained slides and place it onto the stage of the microscope. Use the stage slips to keep the slide in place. 4. Focus using the xx low power objective lens by first using the coarse adjustment knob to bring the lens as close to the slide as possible. Focus by moving the coarse adjustment knob to move the lens away from the slide. . Use the knobs on the stage to move the slide up and down, and side to side to find a portion of the slide with a good amount of sample on it. 6. Get the immersion oil and place a small drop of it onto the slide where the light is shining through it. 7. Switch into the xx oil immersion objective lens and focus using only the fine adjustment knob. 8. If necessary, use the light source and the condenser to alter the illumination of the slide. 9. Observe the color shown on the slide and determine if it is pink or rupee. If it is purple, it is gram positive, if it is pink, it is gram negative.

Understanding the phenomenon of shale gas revolution Research Paper
Understanding the phenomenon of shale gas revolution - Research Paper Example The cost of gas is projected to go down as there is surplus production. The future of the revolution depends on proper policies to solve any crisis and bringing balance in regard to energy prices that will be suitable for both the countries experiencing the revolution and the major oil and gas producers. In the recent past, the energy sector has witnessed some technological advancement aimed at resolving the global energy crisis. Research beyond the current crude oil reserves has led to significant discoveries such as shale oil deposits that have added to the annual increase in production of oil and gas. These developments are thought to play a significant role in the global oil markets and energy at large. The technology is prevalent in the North American continent that is United States and Canada, who are exploiting the venture in large scale. Although there are a lot of uncertainties regarding the global energy markets, shale technology offers a great deal of ways that will enable America take advantages in the geopolitical sphere. The promise and potential of shale gas production are relatively high with the ability to impact substantially on the market economy. Shale gas presents a cheaper source of non-renewable energy that is environment-friendly, and most plants are substituting coal for it. However, the potentiality of shale technology depends on the primary producers that are Canada and the United States who are currently the supply hub. The

If a strategy does not require major changes in the culture of the organization, it may be easy to adopt and it may not even consume ample amount of time. When two organizations join hands together it is very important that the organization pays emphasis to the link between the organizationââ¬â¢s culture as well as strategy. For example: The merger of Compaq and HP was quite astonishing as the culture of both the organizations was quite different from each other (Fried, 2002, p.1). HP was focusing on a huge portfolio of products, they spent heavily on inventing new technology, the management style practiced in HP was such that the management was heavily involved in the organization and the decision making process of HP was quite professional in nature. On the other hand Compaq spent less on inventions, they had a smaller portfolio as compared to HP and the managemen t style was dictatorship like in nature because decisions were made on the top level and handed down to the lower level and they took heavy risks. This example clearly shows that there was a misfit between the cultures of the organization and the strategy of merging both the organizations. Fried, I. (2002, September 2). Gap Case Study- Analysis current strategy Essay
Gap Case Study- Analysis current strategy - Essay Example 45). The demographic trend include factors like the number of target consumers, age mix, distribution of people across target geographical areas, population composition by ethnicity and trends in income within target market. These factors have significantly remained constant for the industry, except income distribution that could have been caused by the economic recession in the year 2009. The industryââ¬â¢s target market that defines its geographical environment is also global due to regional and international trade. Its economic environment is however variable and depends on factors such as interest rates, inflation rates and recession (Ireland, Hoskisson and Hitt, 2008; Thompson and Strickland, 2009). The industry is also significantly influenced by political factors that include legal systems and governmental agencies that protect consumer interests and include legislations and regulatory bodies and sociological and cultural factors such as general attitudes, health concerns, and cultural beliefs among the target market that significantly affect the industry and are particularly influenced by morality, taste, and preferences. Industrial operationsââ¬â¢ dependence on technology for production and marketing also identifies technological trend as a factor to the family clothing industryââ¬â¢s environment besides globalization that facilitates international competition (Ireland, Hoskisson and Hitt, 2008). Porterââ¬â¢s analysis of the industryââ¬â¢s competitive forces The industry operates in a free competitive market. Its competitive forces can be explored through the Porterââ¬â¢s approach of that identifies ââ¬Å"threats of new entrants, bargaining power of suppliers, competitors, bargaining power of buyers and threats of substitute products or servicesâ⬠(Henry, 2008, p. 71). Threats to new entrants into the industry are weak because of the nature of the industry that includes established participants with consumersââ¬â¢ retention s trategies. One of the factors that make it difficult for new entrants is the branding strategy that key players have adopted. With five major firms in control of the market and their established branding efforts, consumers have developed preferences and are reluctant to try products from new firms. As a result, inability to penetrate the market discourages potential new entrepreneurs and those that venture into the industry do not exert significant pressure on existing market players, especially the major players. The small profit margin factor in the industry that requires economies of scale for sufficient profitability is another factor that regulates potential new entrants into the industry, as small-scale ventures are largely unprofitable and new firms finds it difficult to command a large percentage of the market. Developed preferences through branding also ensures consumers strictness on supply chains or outlets from which they acquire brand commodities, as new channels and ou tlets are treated with suspicion. This preserves existing participantsââ¬â¢ position in the industry (Thompson and Strickland, 2009; Henry, 2008). Buyers bargaining power is another factor in the Porterââ¬â¢s forces model. It defines the collective ability of a group of buyers or a single buyer to dictate relations with an enterprise in sales terms such as prices and other terms and

Challenges of Tourism in Orlando Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Challenges of Tourism in Orlando - Essay Example The growth of Orlando from a small town to a large internationally-recognized tourist city has been shaped by several factors. The hostilities between Settlers and Seminole Indians resulted in Floridaââ¬â¢s statehood. In the 1860s, cattle ranching was the widely practiced activity in Central Florida. However, the practice was characterized by chaos resulting in the violent cattle wars of the 1860s (Frommers, 2015). Earlier, infrastructure was absent, and its development began in the 1870s. As the years progressed, cattle ranching was abandoned, and residents picked up citrus farming, industrialization, and real estate development. Fires and fruit-fly infestation rolled back the gains, but infrastructure expansion and the population growth continued during the Second World War.Postwar prosperity of Orlando was contributed by the strong financial and transportation infrastructure developed during the Second World War. Also, the advent of the air-conditioner attracted more people to the city. The bustling tourism industry discharged millions of dollars into the local economy and the massive industrialization in the 1950s contributed to rapid growth. Elsewhere, the prosperity has been characterized by the absence of civil behavior. The cattle wars of 1860ââ¬â¢s saw the seeds for gunfights, bar brawls, and murders. The problem of cattle rustling is an activity that petered down, but has persisted up to now. Orlandoââ¬â¢s tourism industry is characterized by theme parks populated with hotel chains and numerous restaurants.

Comparative Data in Healthcare Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Comparative Data in Healthcare - Term Paper Example The use of such information can help healthcare funders as well as practitioners identify problem areas in clinical performance and enhance quality improvement strategies (Powell, Davies, & Thomson, 2003). On the other hand, patient benefit by having the capacity to make informed choices of a care provider based quality standards and competitive costs (Davies, & Marshall, 1999). There are several ways in which comparative data is useful in improving quality and performance in health care organizations (Powell, Davies, & Thomson, 2003). Comparative data is efficient in pointing out problems related to clinical performance. Even though, outcome of quality of care given to a patient is easily measured as a whole, analyzing performance data of an individual practitioner can shade some the light. Quality of clinical performance can also be measured using comparative data across departments of different hospitals. For instance survival or a recovery rate of patients admitted to cardiac and orthopaedic surgery across different hospitals can be compared to rate clinical performance (Goodroe, 2010). Comparative data is also useful in informing and driving quality improvement activities in a healthcare organization (Powell, Davies, & Thomson, 2003). Such data provides useful and specific information on quality improvement strategies used by best performing institutions. Even though quality improvement is a standard goal for all healthcare institution. (Davies, & Marshall, 1999)
Movie Review on ââ¬ÅThe Promiseââ¬Â Essay Example for Free
Movie Review on ââ¬Å"The Promiseâ⬠Essay The movie entitled ââ¬Å"The Promiseâ⬠by Chen Kaige is a depiction of love and truth that lies beneath different circumstances of the characters. The promise is love where two people will unite as one in the end as they unravel their past. The main characters in the story are general Guangming, Qingcheng, and Wuhuan. These characters mould the story into an enthusiastic construction that leads to tremendous ending. This movie has been recognized in the whole country of China as well as the different parts of the world. Its recognition became remarkable for it brought cultural tradition to the heritage of China with the concept of true love and fate. à à à à à à à à à à à The movie created huge effects for it shows the historical situation of China where territories are being built and dynasties are being produced. Though this movie is fictional, it shows the character of Chinese culture as it embodies the life of its people and the way how leaders utilize their powers and richness towards their region. This movie also shows that a man will fight in the battle to save his woman despite of all the risk and troubles that he may encounter. à à à à à à à à à à à Based on my understanding in this movie, I have seen that along with other Chinese movies, this movie discussed how love prevails in any circumstance of life. It is somehow the opposite in todayââ¬â¢s culture when men and women have no time to love one another because of their social equality. From the time when women became recognized in their country, they wanted to hasten their richness and become powerful but they already forgotten their traditional values about love and how it justified their being and essence as Chinese. However, the movie showcased great talents and effects as well as technicalities as it depicts the social realm of China during the year of dynastical love. Reference Kaige, C. The Promise.

Comparing Brave New World to Modern Day
Comparing Brave New World to Modern Day Prediction to future technological warfare in Brave New World When thinking about the greater good and scientific advancement, most people believe that they are always beneficial to society but brave new world gives us the negative perspective of technology advancements. In the novel, brave new world written by Aldous Huxley, warns it readers about technological disadvantages and harms. Particular these disadvantages are evident in the field of biology and technology. Firstly, scientific advancement of which Aldous Huxley warns us is about biological technology used. The huge production of humans is achieved and made through process of bokanovsky process. The Director said , But a bokanovskified egg will bud, will proliferate, and will divide [à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦] every embryo into a full-sized adult (Huxley pg.3-4). Humans are being genetically modified and engineered in the experimental laboratories rather naturally. In the real world scenario, it is seen that cloning is a huge scientific advancement that has been made and is still being developed but is considered unethical when living things are brought into the matter of especially human cloning. This idea is also evident the book of thousand splendid suns where the Taliban controls , brain washes and teach lies , deny other religions , restrict from having freedom of thought from the people of Afghanistan also where weapons are a form of power such as guns and drones. Moreover, connecting to pre sent world we can see that embryonic stem cell research is a real thing where an egg cell is fertilized by a sperm to create a human embryo or basically create life. Keeping in mind this process can be seen unethical by some people as they have different values and beliefs. Just like the bokanovsky process this process is also is messing with an embryo and altering gods work. In Brave new World person intelligence is dependent on the amount of alcohol injected into their individual embryos before the process of life starts. Mr. Foster says that, We can make a new one with the greatest ease-as many as we like (Huxley pg.128). Epsilons have a heavy amount of alcohol injected in the decanting process whereas alphas and betas do not go through that process because Epsilons being a lower class society. Todays science is capable of modifying a person DNA but is not able to fully develop a human being by its own yet cloning of animals has been done in our world. For example, Dolly the shee p is a cloned animal who lived a normal live which offered hoped to scientists to use cloned cells in medicine also it was seen that cloned animals age quicker than normal offspring. But this first cloning done my humanity was a big step towards the future and biological advancement. By making a world where human beings are massively produced biologically, Brave new World illustrated those advancements in the aspects of biology, which display it being dangerous despite the wellbeing and betterment of the human race. According to Huxley, advancements in technology can also be a threat to mankind and the society. Among technological advances, one danger is the growth of pharmacology or the in taking of drugs by people and its side effects. The director says that, One cubic centimetre cures ten gloomy sentiments (Huxley pg.46). Soma helps the users into a dream world, providing them with total relief from fear and providing them with happiness. This relates to the character Abigail William, from the crucible where she is acting as soma to the society. Abby manipulates people to get what she wants; her intentions are solely to benefit herself. She does not care about the consequences of her actions as well as she is able to manipulate the town to hurt the people she does not like. Just like the soma which is acting as positive thing for the people of brave new world but in reality a negative one, we can see how medical advancements such as x-ray devices, MRI machines and medical drugs help a person restore his/ her health and making the average human life expectancy much better as years are passing. Technology effects entertainment by altering all the games to be played by humans. Mustafa Mond says that, All conditioning aims at making people like their inescapable social destiny(Huxley pg. 13). Game make less organization, making a person bound to a superficial entertainment as it defies the ideology to be creative. This relates to a thousand splendid suns because men in the book do not care what happens to a women, so do the people of brave new world not care about connecting on an emotional level with each other, everybody serves their purpose within society and each person is there for anybody to use (even sexually) which is similar to a thousand splendid suns where the wife only role is to serve their husbands purpose and fulfill their needs just like Laila providing Rasheed with an heir. This can also relate to our present teenagers gaming mindset where advancement in ga ming technology have caused massive violence and hatred among teens making them do crime. For example Grand theft Auto is a game about stealing, shooting and hurting random people. Due to his game one of the incident that occurred in United States was the one teenager who shot two police men and was prisoned due to his crime. Similar to biological disadvantages, technology can be a dangerous factor towards the society if used inappropriately and without the regarded for the well-being of the human race. Society must ensure that technology and scientific advancements is changing to suit human needs but rather changing human race to suit science. Moreover the world one day without individual free will and sense would make it impossible to overcome these factors. Works Cited Huxley, Aldous, Margaret Atwood, and David Bradshaw. Brave New World. The Fight Against Child Abuse :: Violence Against Children
Could you imagine how children must feel when they are abused by someone that is supposed to love and protect them, and nothing is done to help them? For this reason, it is important to realize there are legislative laws protecting child abusers from hate crimes, and excuses certain people from mandated reporting abuse. In fact, almost 5 children die every day as a result of abuse (Child Help, 2011). Also, money is spent to convict and imprison child abusers which could be put towards programs that help people to recognize and prevent abuse. Children are the future; therefore, it is important for them to grow up in an environment they can thrive, feel safe and free from harm. After all, as the old saying ââ¬Å"It takes a village to raise a childâ⬠stands true to this day. Now is the time for everyone to put forth the extra effort to create ways to bring child abuse, a growing epidemic to an end. As responsible citizens it is the duty to report when child abuse is suspect ed, create laws that implement stiffer penalties, and teach people how to recognize the signs and how to prevent abuse. Anyone that suspects a child is neglected or abused should be mandated to report the abuse to an official, no exemptions, and no exclusions. Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline if available at 1-800-4-A-CHILD (1-800-422-4453). This number is used to report abuse, or get help from abuse (Help Guide, 2011). A suspected child abuse case is reported every 10 seconds this totals to more than 3 million cases yearly involving more than 6 million children (Child Help, 2011). Imagine how many child abuse cases go unreported! If children are not protected from abuses this may make the victims lash out later in life and be abusers themselves. Bill SB1313 will excuse people that volunteer their time from mandated reporting. An example of a volunteer that would not be required to report abuse under this law would be a Sunday school teacher. If the Sunday school teacher is aware of child abuse within the church, then the teacher would be exempt from mandated reporting (World Net Daily, 2 004). If most child abuse cases go un-reported imagine if this law passed! The number of child abuse cases and deaths resulting from abuse would drastically increase.

Free Essay on Hecabe :: Hecabe Essays
Free Essay on Hecabe Euripides' play Hecabe, produced in 425 b.c.e., begins with an introduction from the ghost of Polydorus -- Priam and Hecabe's youngest son who was sent away with treasures to stay with a family friend, Polymestor, in Thrace for safekeeping. Troy has fallen now, and when news reached Polymestor, he killed Polydorus and flung his corpse into the sea. It's due to float ashore today. Meanwhile, the ghost of Achilles has appeared to the Greeks and demanded sacrifice: Polyxena, another daughter of the former Trojan royal couple. Priam is dead. His widow has much to bear soon. Hecabe has dreamt of these two children and bad omens. A Chorus of Trojan women, now slaves of Agamemnon, reports of the demands of the dead Achilles and the recent Greek debate. A woeful Hecabe informs Polyxena but the girl seems more sorry for her mother's grief than for the loss of her own life. Odysseus arrives and Hecabe appeals to his sense of honor: she reminds him that she alone recognized him in his disguise when he sneaked into Troy once but did not rat him out. So take her, Hecabe, instead of the girl. Odysseus employs some sophistry to weasel out of such a deal. He and Polyxena exit. The Chorus speculates on where it will end up now. Thessaly? Athens? A Greek herald, Talthybius, wonders, "is all our belief in gods a myth, a lie / Foolishly cherished, while blind hazard rules the world" (77). He has the lamentable duty to inform Hecabe of Polyxena's noble death, who "even as she died, took care to fall / Becomingly, hiding what should be hidden from men's view" (79). Now Hecabe must prepare the body for funeral rites. She sends an old attendant to fetch a jar of sea-water. Polydorus' corpse is discovered, and Hecabe requests from Agamemnon the right to have vengeance against Polymestor. Agamemnon thinks that "women -- can't do anything" (89), but whatever. Polymestor is sent for and brings his two young sons. He puts on a hypocritical yet cursory display of sympathy. "The gods dispose our fortunes / This way and that in sheer confusion, so that we / May reverence them through fear of the unknown" (92).

Foreign Direct Investment Essay
Today, the traits of foreign investment have change than it was for two decades. Then it was mainly followed by the ââ¬Å"multinationalâ⬠companies to build their image. Foreign investment was never deemed as an autonomous ââ¬Å"economic activityâ⬠, in fact I was always conceived to be a procedure to assist in trade related activities. However, one can not perceive ââ¬Å"foreign direct investmentâ⬠as an assistant to trading activities. It is necessary for the growth and development of capital that the resources should be efficiently distributed and apportioned. Nowadays, the flow of capital is against the expectations, as most of the capital moves towards the ââ¬Å"developed countriesâ⬠. (Konrad, 2000) The fact is that excessive flows of capital must have been initiative in the ââ¬Å"developing countriesâ⬠. These have the dire need of direct capital investments for development and reconstruction. Although, developing countries do have room for these types of investments, the presence of high ââ¬Å"risksâ⬠there discourages high foreign investments. Hence, one can say that today the largest piece of work is to introduce reforms in the process of capital distribution. Being a new concept all the ââ¬Å"large and smallâ⬠countries adopted ââ¬Å"foreign direct investmentâ⬠with great ââ¬Å"concernâ⬠and doubts. Today it is a part of the aims of the companies to facilitated and sustain foreign direct investment. Large enterprises go for external investments. However, the availability of ââ¬Å"mutual fundâ⬠has facilitated foreign investment to the ââ¬Å"small investorsâ⬠. (Konrad, 2000) Today, most of the developing countries are experiencing high capital flows. In other wards one can say that foreign direct investment is the major source of capital availability in the developing countries. It has even taken over the funds provided by the government and ââ¬Å"multinationalâ⬠banks for development and reconstruction of the developing countries. About one third of the investments in developing countries are actually done by the international investors. Recently, the flows of capital form the ââ¬Å"developedâ⬠to the developing countries have spiked causing the positive outcome of the investments from the OECD to the ââ¬Å"non-OECDâ⬠countries. (Konrad, 2000) à The increasing importance of the ââ¬Å"foreign direct investmentâ⬠has increased the demand for the creation of an international investment platform. Investment is actually functioning of economics that enjoy high social importance. It also assists in the achievement of maintenance and growth of the countries. The role of policies in the sustainability of investment in the develop countries helps to form ââ¬Å"Market disciplinesâ⬠. It is for this reason that most of the ââ¬Å"policy-makersâ⬠rely upon it in the development of the policies. (Konrad, 2000) The lust of making money has many dire implications. The US governmentââ¬â¢s stances to raise the investment prospects resulted in high reception of taxes during 1992-1998. This increase in the ââ¬Å"valueâ⬠of investment areas termed quite profitable for the US. It got the chance to overcome its ââ¬Å"budget deficitâ⬠, to build an appreciable budget for defense purpose; it also helped the US government to make certain national and international investments. That ultimately led to its development and strong economic presence in the world. However, the situation is opposite in the ââ¬Å"developing countriesâ⬠. There the ââ¬Å"policy makesâ⬠are facing many difficulties in the investment and development of society mainly because of the availability of limited capital inflows. (Konrad, 2000) The greater increase of Foreign Direct investment among OECD countries-ââ¬Å"Organization for Economic Co-operation and Developmentâ⬠- show that the OECD do have some stake in such type of investments. In fact the most of the foreign direct investment in developing countries is actually a result of the investment done by the OECD countries. Notwithstanding, yet OECD countries have not adopted a ââ¬Å"multilateral agreementâ⬠for such type of investment. These types of investments can only be facilitated and practice by following the ââ¬Å"guidelinesâ⬠set by the United Nations. à The policies adopted by the European Union for the implementation of foreign direct investment are totally different from other countries. Most of the ââ¬Å"treatiesâ⬠and policies followed by the EU member states preserve ââ¬Å"foreign direct investmentâ⬠in them. The EU countries cannot sign or ââ¬Å"negotiateâ⬠any ââ¬Å"multilateralâ⬠investment proposal individually. However they can form a ââ¬Å"bilateralâ⬠investment proposal individually. (Konrad, 2000) The well known matter of foreign direct investment is ââ¬Å"home stateâ⬠. This principle refers to a countryââ¬â¢s ability to hold the investment made by its investors in some other country. This principle have stake in the foreign investment even after completely depending upon the ââ¬Å"state responsibility principlesâ⬠and the involvement of diplomats.à This principle proves that both investments and trades have different implications. (Konrad, 2000) Foreign direct investment is in many ways necessary for attaining ââ¬Å"developmentâ⬠which can be maintained for a longer period of time. Unfortunately. most of the current investment policies and the framework are not properly maintained. A proper ââ¬Å"investmentâ⬠is required to take over them. Therefore, a collective ââ¬Å"international investment regimeâ⬠is required to facilitated and make public foreign direct investment. Today, due to increase in the direct investment from foreign countries developed countries have a limited share in the investment GDP than they had during the ââ¬Å"Environment and Development Conferenceâ⬠conducted by the UN. Today, countries like ââ¬Å"Brazil, China, Chile, Argentina and Mexicoâ⬠have a big share in the implications of foreign direct investment. However, it is not reliable for a country to totally rely upon this type of investment. Using such type of investment to develop funds ends finishes all its resources. (Konrad, 2000) This may affect the ability of the country to invest for maintaining its development. In other words the outflow of capital should be directed towards the developing or underdeveloped countries. Up till now all the initiations to constitute an ââ¬Å"international investment regimeâ⬠have failed only because of the divergence of perspectives among the United Nations and the OECD. à United Nation has mainly focused upon the duties of the ââ¬Å"multinational corporationsâ⬠however the OECD countries are concerned with the ââ¬Å"Investors rightsâ⬠to introduce reforms in their investmentââ¬â¢s security. (Konrad, 2000) Today, it is really necessary to differentiate between the ââ¬Å"rightsâ⬠and duties of the private and public sector investors. Unfortunately, none of the current international corporations are following this approach to attain compatible foreign direct investments for their country. It is necessary for most of the ââ¬Å"internationalâ⬠corporations to build an equilibrium investment policy. Only then a capable foreign direct investment policy can be developed and implemented. Moreover, ââ¬Å"the relationship between the investorâ⬠and the country been invested in is different from the relationship between the exporting country and the importing country. It is obligatory upon the investors to attaint the investing rights of the country, he wishes to invest in.à And it is for this reason the development of an international investment platform is necessary. (Konrad, 2000) For the implementation of the foreign direct investment and the solution of wars it is necessary to have a publicaly legitimized system. It will assist in the proper functioning of the investment platform. Foreign direct investment will pave ways for the development of a platform where investment treaties could be building. A pact have been designed properly can help to meet the policies of foreign investments. These pacts will make the aims of the ââ¬Å"foreign direct investmentâ⬠platform more clear and applicable. However, the outcome of these types of small and big agreements will be the formation of ââ¬Å"regimeâ⬠that would be easily accept and implement the changes in the foreign direct investment. Up till now all the initiatives taken by ââ¬Å"World Bank, WTO, and UNâ⬠to facilitate these investments have failed. In fact the difference of opinion among the policy makers resulted in the deadlock. Although the organization built for the just implementation of the foreign direct investment must be predictable and flexible for larger duration. (Konrad, 2000) Foreign direct investment has shown subsequent increase during last 10 years. It is believed that many factors are responsible for this increase. à To get increased capital flows from public and ââ¬Å"privateâ⬠sector and the formation of liberal ââ¬Å"global financial systemâ⬠helped in the ââ¬Å"development and globalizationâ⬠of product manufacturing. The cause for the raise in the flow of ââ¬Å"long-term investmentsâ⬠towards the south is the growing interest of ââ¬Å"public and privateâ⬠investors in the region. Especially, most of the public departments and officials showed great interest for the international investments. These investments were supposed to assist in countries development and reconstruction. Foreign investments usually undermine the domestic industry. Therefore, most of the ââ¬Å"developing countriesâ⬠build certain rules and regulation for the foreign investors. These initiatives were only taken to preserve and develop the ââ¬Å"domestic industryâ⬠. Admittedly, increasing autonomy of finance and trade as well as the growing prospects of investments has resulted in the formation of ââ¬Å"newâ⬠atmosphere that assists in the arrival of foreign investments. à Notwithstanding, ââ¬Å"global economyâ⬠has also played a great role to introduce new prospects in the spheres of foreign direct investments. The increase in the ââ¬Å"intra firm trade and internationalization of productionâ⬠has been actually resulted form the growing competition among the ââ¬Å"multinational corporations (MNC)â⬠. With the globalization the multinational organizations are also growing. Foreign direct investments are necessary for the Multinational corporations so that they can raise their competitive popularity and explore their business to the ââ¬Å"new marketsâ⬠. All the factor relating to the ââ¬Å"demand and supplyâ⬠of the foreign investments are necessary for the development of foreign direct investments (FDI). FDI involves less ââ¬Å"risksâ⬠than other investment programs. It is for this reason that today the supply of investments and the process of ââ¬Å"lendingâ⬠are dominated by the FDIs. Although, most of the Asian countries were badly affect by the ââ¬Å"financial crisesâ⬠of 1990s, even then they enjoyed heavy ââ¬Å"inflowâ⬠of foreign direct investments. Explicitly, most of the multinational corporations ââ¬âthat rely upon the exports- do not need inflow of capital for the ââ¬Å"productionâ⬠of their produce. However, the decreased in the value of ââ¬Å"localâ⬠currency has resulted in the demand for foreign investment. It is for this reason that an environment for the foreign direct investments is progressing. Today, the competition in the ââ¬Å"trade, transportation and telecommunicationâ⬠sectors has rocketed globally. Therefore, in order to remain in the race most of the corporations have to depend upon the ââ¬Å"Relative factor costâ⬠. Countries more anxious to attain foreign direct investment try to make their domestic product international and to make adjustment in their infrastructure globally. This approach usually adopted by the countries where there is expensive labor. à Mostly, the ideology of ââ¬Å"export and intra-firm tradeâ⬠is linked with the ââ¬Å"efficiency seekingâ⬠foreign direct investments. In most of ââ¬Å"service sectorâ⬠foreign direct investment is used for the formulation and implementation of ââ¬Å"market-seeking and resource-seekingâ⬠plans. (Odele, 2001) Mostly companies willing to explore ââ¬Å"new marketsâ⬠bring the FDIs in service sector. Major aspects of the foreign direct investment is the ââ¬Å"geographicalâ⬠closeness of the developing and ââ¬Å"newâ⬠markets. This approach is usually adopted by the corporations, want to capture and attract ââ¬Å"new consumersâ⬠. Most the companies that want to attain ââ¬Å"globalâ⬠market adopt ââ¬Å"cross-borderâ⬠strategies for foreign investments. These strategies are based upon the ââ¬Å"acquisition and merger (M& A)â⬠of international firms. Mostly corporations in the ââ¬Å"banking, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals and insuranceâ⬠sector adopt M&A approach for FDI. In 1997 the merger and acquisition approach was considered the major cause of the ââ¬Å"inflowâ⬠of the foreign direct investment in the industrial sectors. According to survey conducted by UNCTAD ââ¬Å"mergers and acquisitionâ⬠cover ââ¬Å"three-fifthâ⬠of the foreign direct investment in the global markets. This approach has also resulted in the concession of industries in the global market. Due to increase in foreign direct investments the ââ¬Å"productionsâ⬠in the foreign market raised to $3.5 trillion. However, ââ¬Å"global salesâ⬠show that the ââ¬Å"international productionsâ⬠have risen to $9.5 trillion. This increase in production has resulted in the increase of the GDP to about 7%. Ultimately, it seems that today foreign investments account for ââ¬Å"one-thirdâ⬠of worldly ââ¬Å"exportsâ⬠. (Odele, 2001) As most of the alternatives of the inflows of capital form the foreign market decreased in 1980s, the demand for foreign direct investment surged. Initially, most of the ââ¬Å"domestic industriesâ⬠of the south countries was preserved by the ââ¬Å"high tariffsâ⬠and restricted interference of investors form the international market. Up till now most of the ââ¬Å"developing countriesâ⬠have worked really hard to protect their ââ¬Å"domesticâ⬠industries from the empowering of international firms. Different rules and regulation were implement in this regard e.g. heavy tariffs were demanded from foreign investors. They were allowed to invest in only limited sectors. Property rights were also denied to the foreign investors. (Odele, 2001) However, it is amid 1998s that these countries realized the importance of FDIs. Therefore, they liberalized foreign direct investment to some extent; most of the autonomy was provided in the ââ¬Å"export orientedâ⬠sector. So that it can be compete in the international market and bring heavy reserves in the country. Yet foreign direct investors were denied independence in the other ââ¬Å"domesticâ⬠sector. The ââ¬Å"financial crisesâ⬠of Asia was also a reason to liberalized FDIs. This crisis proved that investments for ââ¬Å"long termâ⬠are more profitable than the ââ¬Å"short-term investmentsâ⬠. à The best example in this regard is of Mexico. Who faced great loss in for its ââ¬Å"short-termâ⬠investment plans during the financial crises? (Odele, 2001) According to ââ¬Å"endogenous growth theoryâ⬠foreign direct investments facilitates development of economy by providing ââ¬Å"Scarce capital, technology and skillsâ⬠. These three serve as elements for the creation of capital in a country. (Odele, 2001) Initially FDI were concerned to be affects the economy of the ââ¬Å"hostâ⬠country positively. But the experiment in this regards have proved that it is difficult to maintain these positive impacts of FDI upon a countryââ¬â¢s economy. It is for this reason the response of the ââ¬Å"host governmentsâ⬠towards the FDI is ambiguous. The involvement of government and proper policies can help to bring positive results of FDI. All the experiments towards the FDI are not positive but some researches have also proved negative impacts of FDI upon the domestic industry and economic growth of the country. Hence, many countries design their FDI policies with great concern. (Odele, 2001) FDI is a crucial element in the ââ¬Å"economic developmentâ⬠of developing and under developed countries. Though it is true that FDI helpful in the production of ââ¬Å"new technologiesâ⬠, providing employment opportunities, facilitates international market accessibility etc. it is also termed as a major cause for the downfall of environmental peace, it badly thwarts the equality of culture and society and disrupts the association with the local governments with the economy.à (Annie et al, 2000)

Gender Roles in Society Essay
What is gender role? Gender roles can be linked closely to the Bible as the relations between men and women as both intuitive and sensual. Biologically gender is not determined; however, as a result of sexual characteristics of either men or women, it is established socially. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations gender is a central organizing principle of societies, and often governs the processes of production and reproduction, consumption and distribution. Gender issues focus on women and on the relationship between men and women, their roles, access to and control over resources, division of labor, interests and needs. Gender relations influence family well-being, household security, planning, production and many other aspects of life including the way we think or feel according to oneââ¬â¢s gender. For this reason the definition of gender role today should be revised and predefined because the meaning it once had is no longer comparable with the Bible. Many countries have experienced huge turmoil and revising of its traditional gender roles within the last generation. These changes in gender roles affect the home, the workplace, and the school, plus they affect all walks of life to some degree. Gender role is a commonly discussed subject in society and many may argue about the true role of a man or a woman. Society and culture are also very important in relation to this subject. This means different societies and cultures may produce children and later, grown men and women, who have quite different views of a man or a womanââ¬â¢s place in the world around them, often determined by their cultureââ¬â¢s gender stereotypes. Gender roles are attached to persons according to their gender. So, what are menââ¬â¢s and womenââ¬â¢s roles in society? Should they be equal or do they have well defined roles they should play? In this day and age, people like to be intolerant by attempting to make the two sexes equal. Most people feel that it is unfair to say that women can do certain activities better than men and men can do other activities better than women but God actually made men and women differently and has given them different roles in life and society. God has made men and women to fit certain roles He has defined. The Bible talks a lot about Godââ¬â¢s roles for men and women. Genesis, the first book of the Bible, talks about Creation and how sin entered the world. When God created everything, it was perfect and good. Right after Adam and Eve disobeyed God, God kicked them out of the perfect place he had made for them called the Garden of Eden. Genesis 3:16-19 says: ââ¬Å"To the woman He said, ââ¬ËI will greatly multiply your pain in childbirth, in pain you shall bring forth children; yet your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you. Then to Adam He said, ââ¬ËCursed is the ground because of you; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life. Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field; by the sweat of your face you shall eat breadââ¬â¢. This is Godââ¬â¢s first example of roles to women and men. It was meant for men to take care of land and work it for food to provide for his family and women would bear children and take care of them and raise them while their husband worked. Again, a man and womanââ¬â¢s role is well defined in a home. They are both made for each other and to grow strong as one. A woman has quite a unique role to fill. She is made as a companion for her husband because without a wife a man is alone and she is the only one who can provide the companionship needs. She should give her husband affection because he needs it just as she needs it also and only she may know the husband in such a way to provide the kind of affection he needs. A wife is there to give physical needs because God made man and woman to rely on one another. Also a woman should bear children for her husband to make a family that they can all love and appreciate. Most mothers spend more time with her children and her influence on their character development is great because they see her the most. Lastly, every woman should be a keeper at home and this requires diligence and the kind of care only women can provide. It is a place of honor among God and His people. ââ¬Å"A woman should be a guard, and ruler and keeper of the affairs of the homeâ⬠(Prov. 31:13-15). There is nothing wrong with a woman working, as long as it is done in the right way it is honorable. All women, whether married or not, can look to the worthy woman for guidance for living godly lives. In Godââ¬â¢s pattern we do not see slavery, but freedom, honor, and true beauty. However, all women shall strive to fulfill their God given roles in their own families, so as to gain honor for themselves, for their families, and for God. In addition, a manââ¬â¢s role in society differs quite differently from a woman. The man is the key to making the family work the way God intended. God puts the responsibility of having a Biblical family on the man. On top of that, men are under a lot of job pressure because of the failing economy which makes it harder to provide for the family. Many men never had a role model in their home. There should be Godly men helping their off springs to become who they ought to be for the glory of God. Men should love their family as Jesus loved the church; he is to also love the members of his family as he loves his body. He is to nourish it. He is to cherish it. He is to take care of it. Thatââ¬â¢s the way God wants a man to love his family. Eph. 5:23 says, ââ¬Å"For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church and the Savior of the body. â⬠Notice that it didnââ¬â¢t say the head over the wife; it said the head of the wife. It is not dictatorship. A man is not the dictator in the family but the man is to protect and provide for his family. Being a good provider is not enough as men have a spiritual responsibility. They should get their family in church each Sunday and take every opportunity to help them learn about Jesus Christ and to grow in their relationship with Him. Men should obey the word of the Lord and ask the Lord to help him be the man he should be. Many of men have failed to lead their family like they should. However, if he is the man, the father, the kind of husband God wants him to be, and if he lifts his family to be everything God wants them to be, one of these days he will reap a good harvest in his children. However, the shifting of gender roles in the past thirty years has been huge. It has happened so quickly that men and women are still trying to sort out what the new roles and rules mean to them although women are no longer expected to be the keepers of the house, in reality, they are in most families and although men are generally open to the successes enjoyed by the women they share their lives with, some still find it hard to celebrate a womanââ¬â¢s triumphs because they feel it attenuates their own. Even though the Bible clearly states the role of a man and a woman many individuals may argue this because the Bible was written a long time ago and they feel such implications do not apply anymore. Yet, the Bible is the word of God and his word is always right and should be abided by no matter how we may feel. Historically, it is important also to note that cultural differences flourish in the emphasis of oneââ¬â¢s gender role and in certain societies such assumption in accepted gender norms can also play some part in the definition of gender identity. It will take time to sort out all the assumptions of the changing gender roles of individuals, but new expectations should result in better lives, better relationships, better schools, and better workplaces.

Organisational Behaviour and Human Resource Management Essay
Organisational Behaviour and Human Resource Management - Essay Example Employee engagement can also be increased through rewarding them accordingly. When they reward their employees, employees feel motivated to work and put in their best efforts. HR is now not only responsible for hiring and firing and compensating the employees, but it also plays an active part in the employee development and trains them after conducting the training need analysis. HR also now conducts training evaluation so as to ensure that the training has proved to be effective or not. A: Resourcing an Organisation ââ¬Å"Does knowledge of HRM help small and medium sized enterprises (SME) ensure they recruit and select employees who can contribute to maximizing the competitive performance of a business?â⬠Today, the technological edge that the companies earlier used to have over each other in terms of the technology employed is now a thing of past. It is next to impossible now for the companies to try to gain advantage over their competitors by simply innovating. Yes, we canno t deny the fact that innovation is the key to better profits but hiring the right kind of employee is very important. Today firms are looking to create better profits by hiring an efficient and effective workforce. An efficient and effective workforce helps the firms realize better profits and better position in the markets if they have the right kind of employees. Earlier there was a trend in which the organizations hired employees that they felt fit the organization, but now the current trend in hiring, is to hire the person who is fit for the job, and possesses the core competencies that are required for the job. If the company has a proper knowledge about the hiring strategies and methods that the company can save a lot of costs by hiring the right people the first time the hiring starts. If a company fails to realize their real requirements and simply by gaining the birdââ¬â¢s eye view of the job they hire someone, the person will not necessarily be able to perform tasks acc ording the job description and will surely fail to produce the desired results. When this happens, then the company will go on look for another employee that can fit the organization. Hiring is the process that costs companies a lot, and a small business is already running on small profit margins, but if they have to spend on hiring again and again then they will end up having a negative cash flow. Having the right kind of people who fit the ideology of the company and have the right skills and competencies are really important as they will help the company gain profits. Another problem that is faced by organizations generally is that they hire on the basis of skills alone. A candidate must possess the soft skills as well as the technical skills to survive in the organization and work the right way. Companiesââ¬â¢ whether the small businesses or the large ones are looking to hire people who are have the social fit for their organizations as firms are looking to create edge over e ach other through the human workforce that they have. If the firm possesses the knowledge about HR, then they can motivate their workforce in the right way. A motivated workforce helps to create results. The small business already possesses a very small workforce, and if that workforce is a de- motivated one then there are chances that the organization will not be able to achieve their targets. It is a general consideration that if a

This syndrome led to the loss of productivity economically through wages, productivity, standards of living and competitiveness amongst others. The book the ââ¬ËLexus and the Olive treeââ¬â¢ argues that nations are supposed to put emphasis on privatization of their economies as well as adjusting their Government policies to streamline with the global strategies for globalization. The Lexus and the olive tree are elemen ts in the post -cold war period where countries strive on building and developing their economies while other nations are fighting for cultural identity through the cold war. This means that the world is facing two struggles, the urge to grow and prosper symbolic of the Lexus and the feeling to retain cultural traditions and identity symbolized by the olive tree. The balance between following the Lexus as well as the olive tree is quite difficult, and both canââ¬â¢t be adhered to at the same time. Steelco Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Steelco - Research Paper Example Thus theirs is a typical business-to-business product, and the direct buyers rely more on the standardized specifications in the industry rather than going by any other criteria or mandate. So far the brand of Steelco is concerned, it is already a known brand within the industry and the key players down the line who act as the direct customers of the products sold by Steelco are aware about the products as well as buy them. Thus it is clear that brand awareness is not required by Steelco. However, given that the new products have not been taken well by the direct customers of Steelco, the branding strategy needs a thorough relook so that both the existing products as well as the new products may be branded in such a way that demands for both these product lines may be augmented. In this regard, in order to take a relook at the branding strategy deployed by Steelco, the first step could be to analyse the existing branding strategy as well as activities of the firm. To this end, the concept of POP and POD comes into play. Kotler (2007) has noted that points of parity or (POP) refers to those associations that are not essentially unique to the brand, however these points may overlap with other brands. He has further noted that the concept of competitive points of parity holds that the associations that are designed in order to negate the points of difference of the competitors. On the other hand, Keller, Jacob and Parameshwaran (2011) have been of the opinion that points o difference are attributes or benefits that consumers strongly associate with a particular brand and are even of the belief that the particular point cannot be found to the same extent with any other brand available. In this context, Steelco has already gone by the typical routes of business to business marketing as well as brand building activities. Their awareness about the new product program has included informing about the latest development at their end to their customers through

Sainsburys valuation analysis using the models of dividend growth and Essay
Sainsburys valuation analysis using the models of dividend growth and cash flow - Essay Example from the financial statement of the company) Dividend à à à 2011 2010 Amounts recognized as distributions to equity holders in the year: 10.2 9.6 Final dividend of prior financial year 4.3 4 Interim dividend of current financial year 14.5 13.6 After the balance sheet date, a final dividend of 10.80 pence per share (2010: 10.20 pence per share) was proposed by the Directors in respect of the 52 weeks to 19 March 2011, resulting in a total final proposed dividend of ?201 million (2010: ?189 million). The proposed final dividend has not been included as a liability at 19 March. Return to shareholders underpinning performance in the year was a 2.3 per cent rise in like-for-like sales (including VAT and excluding fuel). This is the sixth consecutive year of growth which has enabled the Company to maintain a good level of shareholder returns. The recommended full year dividend of 15.1p is 6.3 per cent higher than the previous year. http://annualreport2011.j-sainsbury.co.uk/downloa ds/pdf/sainsburys_ar11_note_10_dividend.pdf The business needs the following: Accurate and timely dividend information enhanced by option market prices A dividend staff steeped in option experience Empirical studies of the forecasting effectiveness The dividend-price ratio changes over time due to deviation in expected returns and in forecasts of dividend growth. The company needs to change the dividend-price ratio to cut off the fluctuations that are due to variation in expected returns from those of varying forecasts of dividend growth. The company has to propose a simple process for expected returns and an even simpler, yet reasonable, for investor forecasts of dividend growth rates. Once again, it has been a challenging but successful year for Sainsburyââ¬â¢s. Among a tough consumer... This paper purports to evaluate Sainsbury grocery retailers using two valuation models. First valuation model is forecast dividend growth using financial statement information to arrive at the forecast or to adjust and validate a forecast based on historical trend data. A dividend is a payment of part of the companyââ¬â¢s profit to shareholders. The Board of directors have agreed to pay its shareholders a final dividend of 10.8 percent per share, which was paid on 15 July 2011 to shareholders on the Register of Members at the close of business. The dividend is covered by the underlying earnings. Dividend will increase only if the shares are high. Sainsburyââ¬â¢s has increased its market share in a crucial economic environment. The grocery has concentrated more on the supermarket sale. Net profit is increasing which means there is higher sale through good sales forecaste without increasing the cost. Second valuation model is forecast free cash flow. Cash flows record the movemen t of cash into and out of the business. This is a valid method to understand the value of money and it helps to record the cash most efficiently. For this, both operating and investing activity are involved. A cash flow forecast, in order to be useful as a management and control tool, must be based on real data and actual commitment. Historical data on which to support a cash flow forecast will be useful, but must be considered in combination with information from your business strategy and your budget in order to project a reasonable picture of what to expect in terms of future cash flows as you move further.

International Business Expansion to South Africa Coursework - 1
International Business Expansion to South Africa - Coursework Example It is also seeking to enter an international joint venture with SAPumps to repair and/or produce components and parts. This paper examines these major events in-depth and gives RRP advice on how to proceed with its international expansion drive. In the first part of the paper, we examine the risks involved in the contract RRP has with its existing sole agent, Agent B and the consequences it will bring to the company if it signs a contract with the new agent, A. It goes further to examine how the company can use commission rates, flexibility, and agency arrangements to control Aââ¬â¢s performance. In the second part, the research examines the foundations and structures of the new international joint venture that is on the verge of entering with SAPumps. It looks at how inventory will be treated, customer relations and the contract structure as well as marketing and distribution of the final products. The issue with Agency B is a very complicated one. Agency B has the sole agency rights for RRP in South Africa. This makes them the only agency that can source for projects in South Africa for RPR. If care is not taken by RPR, it could get involved in a breach of contract with Agency B if it goes ahead to sign this contract with Agency A. If this happens, Agency B will be entitled to claims for damages. Secondly, if RRP goes ahead to sign this contract with Agency A, granting it exclusive rights without a proper care with regards to the agreement with Agency B, Agency A will not get access to the exclusivity it desires. This could also pose legal problems for Agency A and B in their operations in South Africa. This arrangement is a principal-agency arrangement in an international context. A principal-agent relationship exists when a party pursues to direct the actions of the opposite party to his own ends for mutual benefits like shareholder-manager and employer-employee relationships (Jager, 2008).

In the movie "Wag the Dog," Conrad, playing ââ¬Å"Mr. Fix it,â⬠employs the technique of doublespeak to take off the gross appearance of the presidentââ¬â¢s sex scandal. He diverts the attention of the public to other false war stories, making the situation seem less serious. In the movie, Motss emerges in the media and public belief that the war story is true, while also believing the idea of sex scandal to be true. However, the false war tales overshadow the true sex scandal of the president until he gets re-elected. When Motss tries to let the cat out of the bag, he is killed to keep the truth secrete. The movie is a clear show of how propaganda forms the normal recipe of the political discourse, where politicians use the power to get everything they
